Movies are fun to watch, but hard to review. Great movies have so much details that it is unfair to judge them after only a single view. However, I don’t think this means that a layperson cannot comment on their personal experience after watching a movie with family or friends. I find people often have different interpretations of a movie depending on their background knowledge. Thus here I will try write down some of my personal reflections after watching a movie. Comments are encouraged.

Inspired by Aristotle’s modes of persuasion, I decide to review a movie by ethos (‘credibility’), pathos (‘emotion’) and logos (‘logic’). This is because, similar to persuasion, a movie actually tries communicate certain messages to its audience, often by using all 3 modes of persuasion implicitly.

In summary:

  • Ethos is the background and reputation of the production team;
  • Pathos is the overall vibe of the movie;
  • Logos is the assessment of the plot.
